LIVING ROOM PERSPECTIVE
VACANT BUILDINGS TO HOMES
PROJECT BY MACKENZIE HOOVER
This project takes a look at many problems we face in our current times. There is a housing crisis where the cost of limited houses on the market has reached an all-time high. Building new homes is a way to fix part of this housing crisis but that also creates a new problem because new construction is unsustainable and poses issues towards the environment by creating large amounts of waste. There is also a vacancy issue and many people are unaware of the government-owned buildings that have no use when they could be adapted for a different need. This project offers a solution to all these issues by taking a look at adaptive reuse and the many existing vacant buildings that can be made to serve a different need of housing. This project will ensure that more housing can be created to keep up with the demands while maintaining sustainable values.
This project will be the prototype house that serves as a base for many other vacant buildings to follow and be adapted. The full scope of this project will incorporate as many vacant buildings in Ontario as it can to provide sustainable housing to meet the high housing demand.
